Web Applications
Web applications are interactive web sites designed to take the place of traditional desktop or standalone software.
Unlike standalone software, web applications run anywhere on any computer or PDA with a web browser, and you have access to your files on any computer. Web applications also trivially enable multiple-user interaction and management features. Desktop Doctors can develop custom web applications for you designed to enhance customer service or streamline internal processes.
- Traditional
- A traditional web application looks and feels like a standard web page, but with features designed to respond to specific user requests and dynamic updates based on user activities. One simple example would be a photo archive allowing visitors to upload photos, which then appear on the web page. Traditional web applications are portable to a wide variety of computers.
- Live
- Live web applications employ the capabilities of modern web browsers to provide an experience more advanced than the traditional page-by-page web browsing model can provide. One simple example would be a collaborative crossword¹ allowing multiple users to fill in parts of the puzzle, whereupon the crossword display on other users' computers update in real-time. To expand on our photo archive example, imagine that the page changes as you watched it, as each photo is uploaded.
- Software Enhancement
- You've found a freely available web application that meets your needs, but this Free/Open Source Software is missing a few features. We can take high quality Free/Open Source Software and customize it for your enterprise. You can merge improvements back into the community project around the software, allowing its development to become part of the main project, or keep the enhancement private—your choice.
- Private
- Many web applications are designed for access only by one company internally, and perhaps registered customers. By working with us, we can build such applications to most closely match your internal processes.
- Public
- Alternatively, you may wish to
provide your Desktop
Doctors-built application as a
public service, for free or for
pay, of your web site, as a way
to attract visitors or improve
sales. For public web
applications, you need
flexibility to allow for traffic
and data storage growth, and
security to protect against the
hordes of the Internet. We build
flexible, secure applications
based on predicted usage metrics
and likely threat vectors,
applying the highest in design
standards to protect against
common performance difficulties
and varieties of attack.
